For me, within Ernst & Young, I’ve never worked for such a flexible firm in terms of the amount of time they let you have off.  It’s very much a culture of give-and-take.  If you put in the hours one week, you know, there’s no problem with you leaving early in order to catch a flight or because you want to do something else.  I am obviously from Ireland, so I go home quite a lot, but every fifth or sixth weekend I’m probably going home, and I will always leave early on a Friday or come in late on a Monday, and that’s never a problem.  Nobody ever sort of… it’s not a clock-watching company by any stretch of the imagination.  People – it’s about quality of work that you do, not about – I suppose in some organisations I think there is this ‘be seen at your desk’ thing, where people are there from eight to six or from eight to seven just to be seen to be there.  Well, it’s definitely not like that here.  People are seen – family is seen as very important, and I suppose if you… my boss, for instance, has quite a young family, so his work/life balance is very important to him.  And because of that, it means that everybody around him – he offers the same sort of structure for them, if people need to leave early or if they need to take time off for family, they can.

London & Nottingham

“My partner recently moved to Nottingham and I thought I’d have to find a new job. Luckily my boss suggested I could work from our office there two days a week and carry on here. The firm’s been really supportive. I’ve got extra locker space for things in the London office and they put me up when I’m here.

“There’s a big reorganisation happening in the UK right now and so there are actually some great opportunities coming up in the Midlands that I wouldn’t have known about had I not been spending time there.  There’s a lot of flexibility at EY – if you can show that you can make it work, there’s nothing to hold you back.”
