I’ve been with Ernst & Young 25 years now. I started when I was six, clearly! I joined as an Audit Senior, and I was really interested in computers, so when I said to a partner, ‘I’m really interested in computers,’ I got the opportunity suddenly to train up as a computer auditor, which was great fun, so I was working with Technology Risk Services. Then I really wanted to work abroad, and so a year after that I ended up being in New York for two years. And the first year I was in Audit and Technology Risk, and the second year I thought, well actually, I’m quite interested in consulting, and I managed to move into the consulting practice in New York as well. And when I returned to the UK, I did a mixture of all three. Around a couple of years after that I actually decided I was going to leave the firm to set up my own IT consulting company, and the partner who I went to, who is still my mentor now, he said to me: ‘Why would you leave the firm? You could do that here. You could set up that business here.’ So he gave me the time, the support, the encouragement, to set up that business within Ernst & Young, be an entrepreneur within Ernst & Young – an ‘intrapreneur’, if you like. And that business was so successful that after a couple of years that’s what helped me get to partner.
“Why would you leave the firm? You could set up that business here.”
