I think it’s quite important, the mentoring and counselling that we get as employees at Ernst & Young. It helps you to develop yourself as a person, but then having seen that, I was quite keen to become a counsellor myself, and it’s quite rewarding and satisfying when you can counsel your direct reports and see them develop through the firm.
I’ve currently got five counsellees. They are in the midst of their professional qualifications, their accountancy qualifications, and they are just about to go into their next set of exams and college session, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they will do just as well in this session as they did last time. It’s an absolutely great feeling when people that you are counselling or mentoring are successful, and you feel like you’ve contributed a little bit towards that success by helping them along and giving them some of the experiences that you had as a counsellee yourself.
