Well, the way that I work my flexible working is: I tell my colleagues, imagine my time off with my kids, that my kids are my most important client; if you disturb me at my most important client, then ring me at home, whenever it is, call me, and I’ll deal with it. But if you wouldn’t disturb me at my most important client, then don’t disturb me when I’m with my kids!
“During my time off with my kids, they are my most important client.”
Always learning
“When I came back here after having kids, I was surprised how much I’d learnt as a parent and how relevant it was. My organisational skills were infinitely better and I was much more patient and perceptive too.
“For me, one of life’s greatest pleasures is to carry on learning. At Ernst & Young, it’s a given. I spend a third of my time ensuring that my team are working in the most efficient way. Have they had training on the latest tools we’ve developed globally? How can we adapt them more effectively for our own particular use? I enjoy the mentoring I get involved with, partly because seeing people learn is so rewarding but also because it helps me learn new skills myself.
“Most days, I come to the office knowing I’ll learn something new. I just love that.”
