I’m an executive in the restructuring team in Glasgow, although in Scotland our department is split between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and we cover the whole of the country. So in Restructuring we work on formal insolvency cases, we do business reviews of companies that may be struggling. So we either go in to review them for, on behalf of the lender, or if the company wants to take a proposal to their bank, we will do that for them as well. We work in capital management, some pensions review work, and we’ve done a lot about Healthier Work as well.
In the main, it will be companies that are in some form of distress, so obviously there’s a whole wide range, but the majority of companies that we see would have an element of distress, and from our point of view the earlier we get in to help them, the better. I did Accountancy and Economics at University, but during my studies, the auditing et cetera didn’t overly thrill me, so when I left University I actually did Basketball Coaching for a year, and I saw an advert in the paper. The Glasgow and Edinburgh offices were going to take on their first ever restructuring person, and the variety of work that came through from the advert certainly enticed me to apply; and then when I spoke to some people I went to school with, and university, who worked at Ernst & Young, that made me want to come even more, when they talked about the people culture et cetera, and just how friendly everyone was. So that was my reason for applying.

What’s Ernst & Young’s reputation like in your field?
“We’re number one for restructuring in Scotland and a number of very strong partners have recently joined the London team. That means our relationships with many of the banks are excellent so we often get some of the most interesting business opportunities around.
“We’re also known as a very friendly and approachable team which is unusual. A lot of people in this business can be pretty hard-nosed but we believe it’s possible to be professional and nice to work with. In fact, I believe it’s essential when you’re dealing with anxious and stressed-out clients. No one makes good decisions when they’re like that so if you can put them at their ease, you’ll get a better outcome.”
