Within Financial Reporting Group which I am enjoying a lot at the moment, it is mainly working with more senior people within the firm, so these are partners, directors and senior managers who are very experienced, and they have been working with the Financial Reporting Group for the past 10 or 20 years. I am a manager within that group, and working with these guys afforded me loads of technical experiences that I think I would never get if I stayed in Audit. And given that I am very passionate about technical stuff, that I think is a very good experience that the firm has offered me, to develop new skills.
There is a pressure on our end, because quite a few of the audit teams rely on us, on new legislations, on updates on accounting standards, which they would take to their clients. So how we can deliver a quality service to our clients – part and parcel of that would be giving them up-to-date information as regards what is happening in the accounting world, and even on new legislations being passed in the UK Government. So it is a big role, I believe, that we are playing with the audit team, otherwise we are not going to give a very good service to our clients, because that is what they expect from us; being Ernst & Young, to give a quality service, and I think part of that will be giving them all this technical knowledge that we have. Yes, we are not client-facing, but we work only in the background, but the audit teams that we are working with are the ones that are getting all the updates that we need to tell them, who will then take that forward to their clients.
“The Audit teams rely on us for updates on legislation and updates on accounting standards, which they take to their clients.”
Moving ahead
“I’d been with another Big 4 firm in the Philippines before I came over to the UK so once I’d familiarised myself with this jurisdiction, I was able to get on pretty quickly. After just a year, I was given the opportunity to go on secondment to a power company preparing for IFRS conversion from UK GAAP. That really helped me develop my specialist knowledge in this area and, after nearly four years in audit when I was looking for another challenge, I was able to capitalise on this experience and joined the Financial Reporting Group.
“I work mainly with senior staff and because they’re so experienced. I’ve been able to learn a lot from them very quickly. Looking ahead I’d like to stay in this area and focus on building up my knowledge.”
